Description
The Surfleet War Memorial is a First World War memorial erected in 1921, designed as a freestanding stone cross with later additions for the Second World War. It is constructed from Lincolnshire Clipsham limestone and follows the style of a Medieval Wayside Calvary, featuring slate panels with incised writing.
The memorial stands approximately 17 feet tall and has a two-foot square pillar base mounted on three steps. The base supports an octagonal hollow chambered shaft, which is topped by an embattled capital that holds the cross. The cross itself measures about 5100 mm in height, 1140 mm in width, and 1140 mm in depth.
Located near the north west corner of St Lawrence’s Churchyard, the base of the memorial includes two slate tablets. The front tablet bears the inscription: ‘PARISHIONERS OF SURFLEET WHO/ FELL IN THE WAR 1914-1918/ NAMES.’ A smaller slate tablet on the side features the inscription: ‘TO THE GLORY OF GOD / IN MEMORY OF THE / MEN WHO FELL IN THE WAR / 1939 1945 / NAMES.’
