Description
The Church of St John the Evangelist is a Chapel of Ease built in 1888, with later additions in 1896 and the 20th century. It is constructed of red brick with stock brick and some ashlar dressings, featuring slate roofs with stone coped gables that include tumbling and kneelers, small gabled ventilator openings, a stack to the south, and cross finials. The church has a nave with a south aisle, a north transept, and a tower with a lantern, as well as a chancel. A stock brick dressed plinth runs around the entire building, and there are regularly placed pilaster buttresses.
The west front features two lancets set in a semi-circular headed slight recess, with a single lancet to the right. The north side of the nave has two lancets. The three-stage tower, added in 1896, is attached to the north and has paired lancets on the west and north sides, along with single lancets above. A 20th-century lean-to is located to the east, which includes a plank door. The tower has bell openings on all four sides, featuring paired trefoil-headed openings with ashlar mouchette and hood mould. The octagonal lantern has four lancets alternating with blind, pilastered panels and ashlar battlements.
The east end of the north transept features a pointed doorway with a plank door. The north side of the chancel has a sill band, and the east end has a sill band running beneath three lancets, with the central one being taller, all set in a recessed blind panel. The south side of the chancel also has a sill band and a lancet. The west side of the south aisle includes a pointed doorway with a plank door, while the south side features three pairs of Caernarvon-headed lights and a pointed doorway beyond with a plank door.
Inside, there is a pointed double chamfered chancel arch and an archway to the north transept with a pointed head and double chamfered surround. The chancel contains a shaped piscina and a niche to the right, with some painted decoration on the chancel roof and a traceried reredos. There is also a 19th-century octagonal font.
