Description
Brownlow House is an early 18th-century house, built in 1772 and altered in the mid-19th century. The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond with painted ashlar dressings and features a Westmorland slate roof with 19th-century gable stacks, partly supported on stone corbels. It has a T-plan layout and stands two storeys plus attics, showcasing a five-bay front. The façade includes a plinth and a central six-panel door with panelled reveals, framed by a plain pilastered surround, a triglyph frieze, and a dentillated pediment, with pairs of plain sash windows on either side. The first floor has five similar windows, all with segmental brick heads and keyblocks. Above the main entrance, a square ashlar plaque displays the Brownlow cypher and the date 1772, with a similar plaque located above the rear door. Inside, the house retains a turned and knopped baluster staircase with raised and fielded side panels and a carved string.
