Description
An obelisk tombstone, dating from around 1835, is located 4 metres southeast of number 4 on Rookery Lane in Leasingham. It is made of ashlar and red polished granite and has a square plan. The structure features three ashlar steps leading up to a polished red granite square base, which is inscribed with the names of Richard Wharton Myddleton, who died in 1835, and his wife Frances Penelope Myddleton, who died in 1873. Above this base, a tall obelisk rises to a height of four metres. Richard Myddleton chose to be buried in what was then the garden of his home, Leasingham Hall, following a dispute with the local Rector. Note that number 4, Rookery Lane is not included in this listing.
