Description

Dunston Pillar is a beacon built in 1751 for Sir Francis Dashwood to guide travellers. Originally 92 feet high, it was reduced in height during the Second World War. The structure is a square pillar made of ashlar stone. It features a double plinth and a pointed single doorway, with an extended plinth that forms a hood above it. Inscribed on the wall is the phrase "Columnam Hanc Utilitati Publicae. D D D F Dashwood MDCCLI".
