Description
The ruins of the chancel at Monks Abbey, a cell of St Mary's Abbey in York, date from the 13th century and late 14th century. Currently, it stands as a roofless ruin. The structure is constructed from coursed rubble and dressed stone, featuring ashlar dressings. It has a chamfered plinth and quoins.
On the south side, there is a central rectangular light flanked by two 14th-century two-light pointed arched windows, which have ogee heads and panel tracery. The north side features a similar single lancet window. The east end includes a stepped string course and the remains of a similar lancet window. All the windows have splayed reveals and hoodmoulds. The south-west end has a filleted respond.
The chancel was repaired and consolidated in 1985 and 1990 and is designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
