Description

Lincoln Prison cell blocks were built between 1869 and 1872, designed by Frederick Peck of London. The structure is made of brick with stone dressings and features slate roofs, clerestories, and coped gables.

The main block is cruciform with an octagonal center and a cross wing to the east. Its south side has 28 bays, highlighted by a projecting center with a south gable that includes a 4-centred arched doorway flanked by 2-light pointed arched windows. Above this doorway are three similar 2-light windows with transoms, topped by a round window and a clock. The central tower, which is machicolated and octagonal, features Early English style pointed arched windows with 2 and 3 lights at each exposed angle. To the west, there is a 19-bay wing, and to the right, a 12-bay wing, each with a sanitary annexe on the north side. The north side has a gabled office wing that is three storeys tall, featuring a large 3-light pointed arched window with double transoms.

The east wing, which was formerly the women's prison, comprises 9 bays and has projecting centers on both the north and south gables, each with a large 3-light pointed arched window.

Inside, there is a central octagonal hall with an arched principal rafter wooden roof that once had a lantern. The building includes cantilevered galleries supported by brackets with pierced spandrels, and the balustrades have a lancet pattern. An imperial staircase with twisted iron balusters leads to the chapel located in the south wing, which features an arch-braced queen post roof. The cells have segmental vaults and doors equipped with flaps and spyholes set in iron frames.
