Description

The Witch and the Wardrobe Public House is a building that dates back to the early 16th century, with additions from the 17th century and alterations made in the early and mid-19th century. It underwent restoration in the late 20th century. The structure is built from coursed rubble and features close studded timber framing with plastered nogging, a stucco front, and roofs that are hipped and gabled with plain tiles. It has two gable stacks, a single ridge stack, and side wall stacks.

The building has two storeys and three bays, arranged in an L-plan. The south front features a central 19th-century Tudor arched doorway with an overlight, flanked by two 5-light windows that have stone mullions and transoms. Above the doorway, there is a central bow window flanked by single glazing bar sashes, all dating from the early 19th century. The west side has various blocked openings and a jettied first floor to the right.

To the left of the public house are the attached outbuildings, which have two blocked arches and a blocked ventilator. There is also a reset quatrefoil vent above, to the left. The jettied east gable displays exposed timber framing.

Inside, the building retains the close-studded gable from the 16th century, an oak winder stair, and a stud wall with rendered nogging. The ground floor rooms feature 19th-century vine trail plaster borders on the ceilings.
