Description
The Church of St Mary is a Grade I listed building located on Church End in Winthorpe. It contains fragments from a late 12th-century church but is primarily from the 15th century. The church features a finely proportioned design with lofty nave arcades, a clerestorey, a tall west tower, aisles, and a south porch, all constructed from stone. Inside, there are restored 15th-century parclose and rood screens, a carved octagonal font with arcading, and 15th-century bench ends with poppyheads, along with elaborately carved chancel stall ends. The nave and aisles have carved roof bosses, and some old glass can be found in the north aisle. Additionally, there are 16th-century memorial brasses and a broken stone cross. The church forms a visual group with Maybank opposite, which is of local interest.
