Description
This is a mud and stud house located approximately 25 meters north of the Church of St Margaret. The house, which is now vacant and partly collapsed, dates from the mid 18th century and the late 19th century. It features mud and stud construction with some brick patching on the east front. The roof is covered with plain tiles and has a central ridge stack. The building is a single storey plus attic.
On the east front, there is an off-centre board door flanked on the left by a sliding sash window, while a window to the right is sheeted over. Above the door, there is a large tile-hung gabled dormer with a 2-light sliding sash window. The framing in the northeast corner has a diagonal brace that is exposed. At the time of the survey, the remainder of the building was covered in ivy.
Barley's illustration indicates that the interior originally had two rooms divided by a central fireplace, with a buttery off the main room and a chamber above. This layout is characteristic of vernacular plans that were common from the early 17th century. This building is a slightly altered example and is therefore of special interest.
