Description
The Church of St Peter is a parish church that was rebuilt in 1889. It is constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings and features concrete tiled roofs that are stone coped. The church includes a western porch, a nave with a bellcote at the west end, and a chancel. The west porch has a pointed outer doorway and is covered with fishscale slates. There is a dentillated eaves course, and the planked inner door has a single chamfered ashlar surround. Above the porch, there is a gabled ashlar bellcote with a trefoil-headed opening. The side walls of the nave have two pairs of single chamfered lancets, while the east wall of the chancel features another pair of lancets with a quatrefoil above and a moulded hood. On the south side, beside the porch, are two fragments of 10th century Anglo-Saxon sculpture, including a low relief cross with a double outline and a cable-moulded rectangular frame. Inside, the chancel arch is wide and single chamfered. There is a painted metal text above the east window, cast iron lamp brackets in the chancel, and a pointed niche on the west wall. All fittings, including the font, which is a small circular bowl on octagonal shafts, date from the 19th century.
