Description

Woodthorpe Hall is a small country house dating from the mid-17th century, with alterations made in the 18th, mid-19th, and 20th centuries. It is constructed of red brick and features pantile roofs along with a pair of central square ridge stacks. The building has parallel ranges and is two stories high with a garret, presenting a seven-bay front. The central entrance consists of a half-glazed door, which is sheltered by a 19th-century gabled trellis porch. This door is flanked by a blank opening and two glazing bar sashes that have cambered heads. The first floor mirrors this pattern with a central window, and all first-floor openings have flat heads. To the right, there is an 18th-century lean-to that includes another glazing bar sash. The gable ends feature second-floor brick bands and consist of four bays with glazing bar sashes and blank openings.

At the rear, there is a 17th-century timber cross mullioned window with leaded lights that illuminates the stairwell. Inside, the house retains a main dogleg staircase, which rises three flights and dates to around 1680. This staircase has turned balusters, a moulded handrail, and acorn knopped newels, along with timber spiral back stairs. The roof is constructed with oak pegged clasped purlins. Woodthorpe Hall is situated within a moated enclosure and was historically the residence of the Ballett family, whose monuments can be found in Strubby Church. Nearby, there is a large ancient oak tree that is noted as a landmark for navigators on the North Sea.
