Description

Utterby House is a house built in 1718, with alterations and extensions made around 1810. It is constructed of red brick, featuring painted stucco dressings, and has a slate roof with stone-coped gables and two gable stacks, along with a lead roof behind a plain parapet. The building is in an L-plan layout.

The front of the house includes a two-storey facing block that was added around 1810. This section has three bays, with the middle bay slightly projecting. The central entrance features a half-glazed door with bordered lights, accessed by three steps, and is sheltered by a Roman Doric portico with a plain entablature. Flanking the entrance are large bordered sash windows. On the first floor, there are three similar but narrower windows, all adorned with rusticated stucco lintels that have key blocks. The roof includes three dormers with pedimented lead roofs and sliding glazing bar sashes.

To the left, there is a two-storey early 19th-century bow window and a large contemporary glazing bar conservatory. On the right side of the front, there is an inscribed painted stone that reads "Built by Captain John Sapfford 1718," positioned above a ground floor window, and a fire insurance plaque above the side door.

Inside, there is an early 19th-century staircase with a wreathed handrail and a carved cut string. The architraves are reeded with patera corner blocks, and the cornices feature Greek key moulding and plaster roundels. The original front wall of the house has been modified to include three wide elliptical arches. Memorials for the Sapfford family are located in the nearby church.
