Description

The Church of St Helen, now closed, is a parish church and tomb enclosure built in 1848 by S. S. Teulon, designed in the Early English style. It features squared limestone rubble, green slate, and stone coped roofs. The structure includes a nave with a western bellcote and porch, as well as a chancel. The west door is situated between two stepped buttresses and is covered by a gabled porch that has a moulded outer doorway supported by free-standing shafts, with a moulded inner surround flanked by single lancets. Above the door is a two-light window, a trefoil-headed niche, and a gabled bellcote. The nave's side walls are adorned with three paired trefoil-headed lancets, while the chancel's side walls feature two single lancets and a pointed doorway on the south side, which has a moulded hood and label stops. The east window consists of three lights with geometric tracery and a moulded hood. East of the chancel is a railed grave enclosure, with cast iron railings topped with spearheads and an urn pedestal tomb for Mary Russell, who died in 1855. Inside, there is a single chamfered chancel arch with octagonal imposts resting on human head corbels, and an arch-braced roof on moulded corbels. Most fittings have been removed, except for a 19th-century pulpit and a 15th-century octagonal font.
