Description

The war memorial in Chapel St Leonards, dating from around 1921, is made of roughly hewn granite. It features a Celtic cross on a plinth and base. Originally dedicated to Private Mark Hill as a monument for the First World War, it was later also dedicated to the village's fallen from the Second World War. The front face of the plinth bears the inscription "TO THE GLORY OF GOD/AND IN MEMORY OF/(NAME)/GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN/THAN THIS THAT HE LAY DOWN/HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS/THIS MEMORIAL IS ERECTED BY/THE PARISHIONERS". The base's front face is inscribed with "1939 (NAMES) 1945". The memorial was funded through public subscription. This memorial is a notable example of a simple tribute to those who served in both World Wars and holds group value with the nearby listed church.
