Description
North Cotes War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was unveiled in 1920. It is situated on the green opposite the Church of St Nicholas, which is a Grade II* listed building, on a triangular patch of grass at the junction of Fleetway and Sea Lane.
The memorial is placed on a small square concreted area within the larger grassed space. It features a 7.5-foot (2-meter) high polished grey-granite obelisk that rises from a collared pedestal, which is set on a three-stepped base. The east face of the pedestal bears an inscription that reads: "DEDICATED TO THE SACRED MEMORY OF THESE FEW MEN OF THE MANY THOUSANDS WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FREELY IN A GREAT CAUSE" followed by three names. It continues with the lines: "THEY SHALL NOT GROW OLD AS WE THAT ARE LEFT GROW OLD; AGE SHALL NOT WEARY THEM, NOR THE YEARS CONDEMN," and includes one additional name. On the north and south faces of the pedestal, there is a total of 22 names of those who fought and returned, listed under the heading "ROLL OF HONOUR."
