Description

The former Church of St. Michael, now a house, was built between 1849 and 1850, incorporating some 13th-century details. It was altered around 1970 by Francis Johnson. The building is constructed of squared greenstone rubble, with limestone ashlar quoins and dressings. It features a decorative tiled roof with raised lead coped gables and antefixae. The nave includes a western bellcote and a chancel with a vestry. At the west end, there is a central lancet window flanked by two 20th-century two-light mullioned windows. The gable has a corbelled octagonal bellcote topped with a facetted pointed roof. On the north side, there are two pairs of lancets with moulded and pointed surrounds, along with a single lancet and a three-light 20th-century mullioned window at a high level. The former vestry has a panelled half-glazed door. The east gable of the nave features a prominent 20th-century brick chimney. In the east wall, there is a lancet, and in the chancel, a two-light window with trefoil heads and a sexfoil, all within a chamfered pointed surround. The south side includes a lancet for the chancel, two pairs of lancets, and two three-light 20th-century mullioned windows in the nave. The south door is adorned with 19th-century shafts and reveals, along with a reset early 13th-century moulded head featuring dogtoothing. The interior is not available for inspection.
