Description

The Church of St Michael is a parish church dating to the 14th and 15th centuries, with significant restorations by James Fowler in 1875 and a rebuilt tower in 1894 by C. Hodgson Fowler. It is constructed of squared greenstone rubble with limestone ashlar dressings and has Welsh and Westmorland slate roofs, featuring decorative tiled ridges.

The church comprises a nave, western tower, south aisle and porch, and a chancel. The three-stage tower, largely rebuilt in the 19th century, has stepped corner buttresses, a plain parapet, and crocketed corner pinnacles. The bell stage has three, 3-light louvred openings with trefoil heads and panel tracery. A 2-light window of the 17th century is situated on the south side, featuring a moulded surround, a chamfered mullion, and a datestone of 1684. A 4-centred arched doorway with a moulded surround, a 3-light window with cusped heads and panel tracery, and a datestone of 1894 adorn the west side. The north side of the nave features a 15th-century 4-centred arched doorway with a moulded surround, and two 14th-century 3-light windows with reticulated tracery. A 19th-century vestry has a narrow west doorway and a 3-light north window. The east end of the church is of 19th-century design, with a 3-light window in the 15th century style. The south side of the chancel has two 19th-century 2-light windows with cusped heads and quatrefoils above. The south aisle contains a 19th-century east window and two early 15th-century 3-light windows, one with cusped heads to the lights and panel tracery, the other with ogee heads. The nave has three 19th-century gabled dormer windows, each with three ashlar cusped lights. A gabled 19th-century south porch has side lights, and a pointed outer doorway features a figure of St Michael and the dragon in a pointed oval surround supported by small shafts. The continuously moulded inner door has a fleuron frieze. A holy water stoup is located on a clustered shaft and is decorated with a shield and fleuron detail to the bowl.

Inside, the church has 15th-century octagonal piers supporting a three-bay south nave arcade with double chamfered arches. A restored 15th-century tower arch is octagonal with double chamfered arch. The 15th-century chancel arch is double chamfered with hollow chamfered reveals and imposts. A 19th-century arch in the north wall of the chancel leads to the vestry, which contains a 19th-century piscina and fireplace. A 19th-century aumbry is set into the north wall of the chancel. The church features 19th-century roofs and pews, stained glass throughout, a 19th-century tiled floor to the nave, and a rustic carved wooden angel, likely from a previous roof structure, above the north door. A 14th-century octagonal font has ogee panels to the bowl.
