Description
No. 1 King Street is a house dating from the mid-18th century, with alterations made in the early 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond and features a Welsh slate roof, with brick coped gables and two 20th-century brick gable stacks. The building has an L-shaped plan and is two stories high, with a five-bay front arranged in a 2:1:2 pattern. There is a first-floor band, and the central entrance consists of a six-panel door with a traceried overlight, panelled reveals, and a pedimented door case that includes fluted architraves and angle paterae. This entrance is flanked by pairs of glazing bar sash windows, and there are five similar windows on the first floor, all featuring flat rubbed brick arched heads. Inside, the house has a stick baluster staircase with a wreathed mahogany handrail and brass star decoration.
