Description
The Ravenstone War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was unveiled in 1920 and altered after the Second World War. It is located in the churchyard of St Michael and All Angels Church in Ravenstone, which is a Grade II* listed building, and stands within the Ravenstone Conservation Area.
The memorial is made from Weldon Stone and Swithland Slate. It features a stylised floriated cross atop a slender, tapering octagonal shaft, which is set on a square plinth. This plinth rests on a two-stepped square base.
On the front of the memorial, the inscription reads "IN GLORIOUS MEMORY OF THE UNRETURNING BRAVE 1914 1919." The other three sides of the plinth are adorned with Swithland slate tablets that list the names of the 28 individuals who fell during the First World War.
The top step of the base has been inlaid with Swithland slate, which commemorates the five names of those who fell in the Second World War. The face of this step bears the inscription "WE WILL REMEMBER THEM."
