Description
The pavilion at the southeast corner of the forecourt at Newbold Verdon Hall is a former pavilion block that has been converted into a farm building. It dates from around 1700 and has undergone alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The structure is built of red brick and features a plain tile hipped roof with a plastered coved eaves cornice, which likely replaced an original timber eaves cornice. This pavilion is the southern one of a symmetrical pair that framed the main entrance to the forecourt of Newbold Verdon Hall; the northern pavilion was demolished around 1965.
While it is similar to the southwest and northwest pavilions, it is not as tall and is a longer single-storey building. The north wall has a central single window, with the upper part blocked and a later window inserted below it. The south wall contains two similar windows, with the right-hand window completely blocked in brick and the left-hand window partly blocked. The west wall features large 20th-century cart entries at either end, replacing earlier openings, and a smaller 19th-century cart entry in the center with boarded doors and a blocked opening above. There is also a window from around 1700 that is partly blocked or infilled, with later windows on either side of the central entry. The west wall is otherwise blank, except for a central inserted and blocked doorway. Most of the original 1700 windows retain rubbed brick flat arched heads unless they have been altered.
Inside, the pavilion has four roof trusses and a plaster ceiling with exposed stop-chamfered principal beams. This building is part of an important group with the main house and other pavilions in the forecourt.
