Description
Shenton War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1920, situated in a roadside garden area at the corner of Pump Street and Bosworth Road, across from the Grade II*-listed Church of St John the Evangelist, Shenton Hall, and its Gatehouse.
The memorial is made of rough-hewn, grey Cornish granite and features a tall wheel-head cross that rises from a tapering, four-sided plinth. This plinth sits on a single-stepped concrete base, which has a low semi-circular projection on the south face.
On the south face of the plinth, there is a smooth, inset panel that displays an inscription and names in incised lettering. The inscription reads, "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND THE HONOURED MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 1918 (7 NAMES) THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE." Above the inscription, there is an incised symbol of a Latin cross.
