Description
The Broughton Astley War Memorial is a First World War memorial, erected in 1921, with a later addition for the Second World War. It has a square shape and is made from limestone. The memorial features an undecorated, infilled wheel-head cross atop a tall, tapering shaft, which has a square collar decorated with foliate designs, a plinth, and a two-stepped base. It is set on a square concrete base.
On the front face of the shaft, there is a recessed relief carving of the sword of sacrifice, and at the base of the shaft, there is a carving of a laurel wreath. The plinth includes inset slate panels on each face, with the dedicatory inscription on the front (north-west) face reading:
"ERECTED/ BY THE PARISHIONERS OF/ BROUGHTON-ASTLEY/ IN MEMORY OF THE MEN/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE/ GREAT WAR 1914-1918/ LET THOSE WHO COME AFTER SEE/ TO IT THAT THEIR NAMES BE NOT/ FORGOTTEN."
The names of the fallen are inscribed on the other three faces. Additionally, a plaque on the upper step of the base is inscribed with "1939 - 1945/ (NAMES)." The memorial is located within a landscaped garden.
