Description

A pair of firemen's houses built in 1912 by Coales and Johnson for Market Harborough Urban District Council. The buildings are constructed of red brick in English bond, with ashlar limestone quoins and a band. They have plain tile roofs. The houses are two storeys high with two windows to the first floor, forming a reflected pair, with doors at the centre. Large quoins are visible on the left-hand side; the right-hand end is bonded into the adjacent Old Fire Station. The original panelled and part-glazed doors, with four-pane overlights, are sheltered by a shared canopy supported on shaped wooden brackets and suspended on scrolled iron stays. Projecting sills and segmental brick arches feature to the ground-floor windows, linked by a flush impost band. Number 12 has a twelve-pane sash window, while number 14 has a UPVC facsimile. The first floor has a square-headed three-light casement with glazing bars to number 12, and a matching UPVC casement to number 14. The windows rise into gabled sections with dentilled verges. Corniced upstands are present on the quoins on the left, and end stacks are visible. The buildings are included on the list for their group value.
