Description

The Elms is a cottage located on Church Walk in Bruntingthorpe, dating from the early 17th century, with an added bay from around 1900. The original structure is timber framed with brick panel infill and features a thatched roof, while the later extension is built of brick with a Welsh slate roof.

The original cottage has its gable facing the street and is two storeys high with a two-unit plan. It consists of eight bays of timber framing, constructed with post and truss techniques, featuring some arch bracing, no sill beam, and two middle rails. There is a new window to the left and a late 19th-century two-light squared bay window to the right. Above, there is a two-light eyebrow dormer. The gable wall includes a queen strut truss.

The front gable is a Victorian or Edwardian addition, which includes a projecting bay window with three sash windows beneath round-headed arches. The paired upper lights are steeply pointed sashes, and there is painted mock timbering applied over the original gable wall. The doorway is positioned at the angle of the additional bay and is sheltered by a lean-to porch that features fretted decoration and curved struts. The squared bay window has margin lights for the sashes, and there is a two-light sash window above with a rendered head. To the right of the cottage, there is a tall outbuilding with a high cart entry, and axial stacks are present on the building.
