Description
The Old Cottage Farmhouse is a cottage that dates from the early 17th century, with an early 18th-century extension to the south and a 19th-century wing at the rear. It is constructed of coursed ironstone rubble, while the 18th-century extension features a brick facade with burnt headers. The building has a cruck frame and a thatched roof throughout. It is 1½ storeys tall and has an L-shaped plan.
On the front elevation, the original bay is located to the left and includes a doorway and a 2-light eyebrow dormer above. There is also a 3-light casement window with small panes and some original glazing, set within a steep cambered brick arched head in the 18th-century brick right-hand bay. The south gable is coped, and the gable wall has been partially rebuilt with breeze blocks, indicating a possible former mud wall.
In the north wall of the rear wing, there is a 3-light casement window on each floor, with the upper window featuring small panes and original glazing. The 19th-century wing is made of brick and has a Welsh slate roof. The rear of the main range is entirely constructed of ironstone rubble on the ground floor, with a rendered upper section. There is a doorway and new windows on the ground floor, along with two swept dormers above. The projecting right-hand bay contains a 3-light casement window on the ground floor and a 2-light dormer that is completely within the roof slope. The building also features two brick axial stacks.
