Description
The Town Hall is an 18th-century building located on the east side of High Street. It is an island building constructed of red brick with stone dressings, featuring bands between the floors and a hipped slate roof. The structure has three storeys and a rectangular plan, with the short side facing north along High Street.
The northern facade includes outer brick pilasters that extend from the first-floor band to the eaves band and cornice. The ground floor is arcaded with three bays, featuring impost bands, stone arches, and footings, although the arcades are now filled in. The centre has double wooden doors. The first and second floors showcase Venetian windows with stone architraves.
The main facade faces west and has an arcaded ground floor with five bays. The centre section projects forward and contains three windows beneath a pediment with moulded stone capping, while the tympanum displays the arms of the Earl of Harborough. The facade features five barred sashes with gauged flat red brick arches.
The southern facade has a three-bay arcade and three storeys of windows above, with some sashes retaining glazing bars, although most windows are blocked. The eastern facade also has an arcaded ground floor but only one window on the top storey. The ground floor features impressive brick vaulting, as it was originally used as a Market Hall and Butchers Shambles. The cellar has similar brick vaulting. It is said to have been built by the Earl of Harborough, "partly for the tammy manufacturers."
