Description

The Church of St Mary is a parish church that may date back to the 16th century. It was restored in 1908 and underwent further restoration with renewed windows in 1930. The church is built of random granite rubble with dressed stone quoins and has a Swithland slate roof. The nave and chancel are under a continuous roof and consist of two bays.

On the south side, there is a 19th-century plank door with stone jambs and a heavy lintel to the left, and to the east, a three-light mullioned window with a chamfered and rebated reveal. The north side features two two-light mullioned windows. The east end has a five-light mullioned casement, and all windows have leaded glazing. The remains of a coped east gable are also present.

Attached to the east end is a 19th-century cast iron railing and gate that encloses five slate headstones from the mid-18th century belonging to the Boothby family of Marston Hall. The interior is plastered and includes a mid-19th-century matchboard dado and a 16th-century kingpost roof with struts and double purlins.

Notable fittings include a wineglass-shaped memorial font with a lattice-patterned bowl inscribed 'J S 1918-1945', an altar table from 1945, an octagonal oak pulpit restored in 1950, and 19th-century wooden lectern, desk, and chairs. There is also a carved wooden gradine from 1911 and a small 20th-century oak chest. Memorials within the church include slate tablets from 1712, 1724, and 1737 dedicated to the Boothby family, as well as a brass altar cross from 1909.
