Description

Hallowes Golf Clubhouse, originally built as a house in 1657, features coursed squared coal measures sandstone with ashlar dressings. The building has coped gables with moulded kneelers and gable and ridge ashlar stacks. It is designed in an H-plan with symmetrical elevations to the north and south. The south elevation is three storeys high with six bays and three gabled fronts, where the outer gables are advanced. The central doorway has moulded surrounds and a hoodmould with dropped returns. Above the doorway is a semi-circular head with a curved dripmould, inscribed with "M 16 57. AM," and it features a six-panelled door. On either side of the doorway are stacked 2-light chamfer mullioned windows, and within the gable apex is another 2-light mullioned window with a dripmould below a blind oculus. The advanced outer gables each have stacked pairs of 3-light chamfer mullioned windows on the ground and first floors, with stringcourses that return to cover the windows flanking the doorway. Each outer gable also has a 2-light attic window beneath a dripmould and a blind oculus. At both ends of the main range, there are single-storey 20th-century additions. The north elevation features advanced outer bays with gables and an attached two-bay range parallel to the main central range, which has 2-light chamfer mullioned windows and a ridge stack at the west end, possibly indicating an external kitchen. The interior has been largely remodelled, but some rooms still display moulded plasterwork on the spine beams, cornices, and simple enrichments. The attic floor of the east crosswing retains two upper cruck trusses.
