Description
Glossop Gas Works, originally the offices of the Glossop Gas Company, is a building dating from 1845 that has since been converted for commercial use in the 20th century. It is constructed from rock-faced coursed millstone grit with ashlar dressings, featuring vermiculated quoins and a Welsh slate roof.
The exterior of the building is two storeys high and has a symmetrical front with five windows. The central doorway is framed by stone pilasters and a pediment, featuring a metal door with a rectangular overlight. This doorway is flanked by two tall round-headed windows with vermiculated keystones, which are fitted with 20th-century windows that have horizontal glazing bars. Above this, there are five similar windows. An ashlar band between the floors is inscribed with 'GLOSSOP GAS WORKS ESTABLISHED AD 1845'. The building has a moulded cornice and cast-iron rainwater goods. The left and right sides of the building are topped with pediments, each containing two round-headed windows on each floor with plain keystones.
The rear elevation also has a symmetrical arrangement of five windows. There is a slightly off-centre round-headed doorway with a pilaster surround and a boarded fanlight, with a small round-headed window to the right. On either side of this doorway are two round-headed windows with keystones and 20th-century windows with horizontal glazing bars and boarded fanlights. Above, there is a tall central round-headed window with margin light glazing, flanked by two round-headed windows similar to those below.
Inside, the building features a wooden staircase with turned balusters leading to the entrance hall, along with panelled doors on the ground floor.
