Description

This is a tombstone and headstone for John Kane, located 20 meters south of the Church of St Anne in Buxton. The memorial dates back to 1799 and is made of gritstone. It features a kerbed slab at the front and has partial remains of iron railings. The inscription on the stone commemorates John Kane, a comedian who passed away on December 10, 1799, at the age of 58. Additionally, the kerbed slab notes that the grave was restored by John Laurence Toole in memory of one of the most eminent comedians of the Victorian Era, who visited Buxton on August 14, 1889, for the opening of the new theatre. John Kane was a friend of William Martin, and it is said that he died after mistakenly eating Aconite, thinking it was a type of radish.
