Tomb and headstone. 1799, dated and inscribed. Gritstone memorial, kerbed slab to front; partial remains of iron railings. The inscription reads: THIS Stone is placed here/In memory of/JOHN KANE Comedian/who departed this life december/the 10th 1799 Aged 58 years. The kerbed slab reads: This Grave was restored by John Laurence Toole in kind sympathy of one of the most/eminent comedians of the Victorian Era/who visited Buxton on 14 August 1889 on the occasion of the opening of the new theatre. John Kane was a friend of William Martin. It is reputed that he died after mistaking Aconite for a variety of radish. (Stark JJ: St Annes Church , Buxton.).
