Description
Nos. 8-14 on High Street East in Glossop are four houses that have been converted into six shops. They date from the early 19th century and have undergone some alterations in the 20th century. The buildings are constructed from coursed millstone grit with tooled dressings and feature stone stacks with watertabling, topped by a stone slate roof.
The exterior is two storeys high. The street front for Nos. 8-12 has an irregular arrangement of five windows. There are four large shop fronts with wooden moulded pilasters and cornices, along with three doorways that have square-headed lintels. The two doorways on the right retain keyed jambs at mid-level. The shop front to the left of centre has a lowered sill, while the shop front on the extreme right has 20th-century alterations. Above the shop fronts, there are four plain horned sash windows and a single 20th-century casement window to the left of centre, all featuring wedge lintels.
The street front for No. 14 is taller and has a three-window range. It includes a central doorway with double panel doors and an overlight set in a stone surround with a moulded cornice on brackets. This doorway is flanked by large shop windows with 20th-century glazing, which are under block lintels with keystones. Above, there are three horned plain sash windows with block lintels and keystones, linked by a continuous sill band. An intrusive window belonging to No. 12 is located at the extreme right.
Inside, No. 14 features an ornate carved wooden archway leading to the hall.
