Description
The barn at Hollins Farm is a farm outbuilding that serves as both a barn and a cowhouse. It dates from the mid to late 18th century and incorporates an earlier doorway that is dated 1692, along with 19th-century alterations and additions. The structure is built of coursed rubble gritstone, rising from a shallow plinth and featuring massive quoins. It has a stone slated roof, although one bay on the south elevation has been replaced with Welsh slate.
On the south elevation, there are five bays, with the central bay featuring a tall double opening without doors that leads to a paved threshing bay. A single doorway is located at the west end, which has a massive chamfered and cambered lintel set within a quoined surround. To the west of the central doorway, there are three tiers of slit breathers, and to the east, there are two tiers along with three inserted openings. The north elevation has an original offshut to the west and an added milking parlour offshut to the east. The east gable includes a full-height doorway leading to a granary overloft, which has a hoist beam above. The west gable features two cowhouse doorways and a window that provides light to the central feed passage.
Inside, the barn has three king post trusses with pegged joints, two of which have curved side braces, supporting a double purlin roof with a ridge purlin. The north end of the west truss is carried on a tall stone pier.
