Description
The war memorial, located 6 metres southwest of St Laurence's Church, was constructed around 1920. It is made of stone and features a large cross on an octagonal base, designed in the Decorated style. The memorial has a deep base that includes a corbelled out shelf, providing seating all around. Above this base, there are three octagonal steps supporting the cross. The cross itself has a moulded square base with a memorial inscription on the west side, encircled by laurel leaves. The shaft of the cross is tall, tapering, and octagonal, with a spurred base. The head of the cross showcases figures of saints on four sides, set within ogee crocketed niches, topped with crocketed pinnacles. The stone used is Clipsham limestone, and the architect responsible for the design was J M Comper. This memorial is included for its group value context.
