Description
Rock House, built around 1780 in Cromford, was constructed by William Arkwright. This substantial building, originally a house and now divided into flats (numbered 1 to 9), is built of ashlar stone. It is three storeys high and has five sash windows, lacking glazing bars. A single-storeyed bay extends from the right-hand side, featuring a central portico with Doric columns. A pier is located on the left-hand side. The building is finished with a moulded cornice and a parapet. A three-storeyed stuccoed wing is situated to the rear of the left-hand side, containing four sash windows. A high brick wall is situated on the west side, connecting to and extending beyond a former stable block, which has three later casement windows. The wall incorporates a sill band running its entire length. A plain pediment sits above, enclosing a stone-faced clock and bellcote, complete with a wind vane.
