Description

Durham House and the attached former shop is a town house and workshop built around 1800, with later alterations. The building is constructed of rubble stone and brick, featuring ashlar dressings and hipped slate roofs, along with five brick wall stacks. It has an ashlar plinth, and all windows are fitted with flush ashlar lintels.

The main façade is three stories high with three windows. It has a central painted ashlar door surround with pilasters and a flat hood, which frames an original six-panel door with glazed top panels. On either side of the door, there are single 16-pane sash windows. Above this, there is a central 16-pane fixed light flanked by similar sashes, and above again are two 12-pane sashes.

To the right of the street front, there is a three-story section with an off-centre doorway featuring a painted, plain pilaster surround and another original six-panel door. The left side has a single 16-pane sash on the lower floors and a 12-pane sash on the top floor. To the far left, there is a two-story shop with a plank door and a small shop window with a painted surround, above which is a single 20-pane casement.

The north front is rendered and features a single three-light glazing bar casement under a segmental head, with a two-light casement and a 12-pane fixed light above. The east front is made of rubble stone with quoins, and most windows have flush ashlar surrounds. The three-story wing has a glazing bar sash on each floor, while the two-story wing includes an unusual two-light lattice window in the former workshop and a glazing bar sash above.

Inside, the building retains a main stick baluster staircase and a wooden winder back staircase. It also preserves almost all of its original doors and various original fireplaces, some of which have their original basket grates. The back parlour features its original range, and the kitchen contains a late Victorian range.
