Description
Meynell Hunt Kennels, dating to 1874-7, were designed by George Devey. The kennels are constructed of red brick with a plain tile roof featuring a blue tile diaper pattern, and include a brick stack and a dentil eaves cornice. The building has an unequal cross plan, comprising a central feed room and service rooms to the north, a draw yard to the south, and two lodges flanking the south side, which open to open pens enclosed by walls and railings.
The south elevation is almost symmetrical, with a pattern of doors and windows with segment-headed arches. Each doorway has a stable-style door, while the windows are 2-light wooden casements with diamond-shaped lights. A projecting gabled bay features a similar doorway flanked by windows. To the right, the elevation continues with a window, door, window, door, window and door arrangement. Another projecting gabled bay encloses the draw yard, with three segmental arched openings on each side, and a central doorway flanked by openings, all featuring iron grills. A circular ventilation hole sits above this feature, and it is topped with a wavy parapet with brick copings.
Four open pens are positioned on either side of the projecting central piece. A 20th-century white-washed concrete block wall runs along the south side, punctuated by eight piers topped by 19th-century stone pyramidal finials. The kennels originally cost £2,489. Original drawings are held at the RIBA Drawings Collection.
