Description
Gardeners Cottages is a row of three cottages built in 1678 and around 1845. They are constructed of red brick with plain tile roofs. The gables are topped with brick copings and plain kneelers. The earlier section features brick ridge and gable stacks, while the later part has one brick ridge stack and two gable stacks, all with paired diamond plan shafts. There is a plain first floor band on the earlier section. The cottages are a single storey plus attics and two storeys, arranged in a T-plan.
The long lower range to the east was built in 1678 as almshouses. The north elevation has three doorways with plank doors, two of which have bracketed wooden hoods. There are also two small single light windows and a 2-light casement, with a single light and a 2-light casement above. The south elevation features four 2-light casements on the ground floor and four 2-light gabled dormers above. The taller cottage to the west was built around 1845.
The west elevation has three symmetrical gabled bays, with the center bay being narrower and advanced. It includes a central doorway with a chamfered surround, a wedge brick lintel, and a Gothic panelled door with an overlight. On either side of the doorway are 3-light casement windows with diamond lights, and there are three similar 2-light windows above. All openings have returned brick hoodmoulds. The return south elevation is asymmetrical but features similarly detailed windows.
