Description

The former Station Master's house at Matlock Station dates from around 1850 and has undergone some alterations and additions in the 20th century. It is attributed to Sir Joseph Paxton and was built for The Midland Railway Company. The house is constructed from regularly coursed squared gritstone blocks with ashlar dressings, some of which are painted, and features ashlar chimney stacks—one on the east gable and the other on the west side wall. The roof oversails and is covered in Welsh slate.

This L-plan house includes an enclosed rear courtyard. The south elevation is two storeys high and has three bays, with an advanced gable on the left side and an open entrance porch at the angle of the two ranges. The left gable features a tripartite ground floor window beneath a wide segmentally-arched head. The centre has a 3 over 3 pane sash window, while the side sashes do not have glazing bars. The first-floor window has an arched head and is also a 3 over 3 pane sash.

The main range has a hipped lean-to roof supported by a square stone column, which encloses the entrance doorway that has a 2-panel door beneath a rectangular overlight. Above this doorway is a 3 over 3 pane sash window beneath a flat lintel. To the right, there is a matching window above a ground floor sash window with an arched head. All window openings feature projecting cills supported by brackets and have dropped returns to the lintels.

The east gable has a projecting chimney breast that is divided into two flues by a tall arched recess that reaches eaves level. The rear yard includes an attached enclosure wall with a gabled access doorway and half-round coping. Within the yard, there are 19th-century single-storey and 20th-century two-storey extensions. The interior has not been inspected. This house is part of the station complex developed by the Midland Railway Company on the route between Derby and Buxton.
