Description
The building known as the barn to the rear of Montgomery House is likely a combination of a barn and cottage, dating from the 16th century, early 17th century, and 18th century. It features a timber frame with brick infill and a stone plinth, topped with a plain tile roof that has one brick ridge stack. The north elevation showcases exposed box framing with two pairs of diagonal braces. There is a central doorway with a plank door, and to the right, there are two 2-light 20th-century wooden casement windows with diamond leaded lights. This section is probably the oldest part of the structure, as it stands on a stone plinth, and the quality of the joinery indicates it was intended for domestic use. To the left of the doorway is another similar 2-light window. This part appears to have been added as a separate structure in the early 17th century, with the two sections later linked together using re-used timbers. The barn was extended to the west in the 18th century. The south elevation is encased in brick, featuring segmental arched windows with 20th-century wooden casements with diamond lights, and a segmental arched cart entrance to the left. Inside, there are three box framed cross walls.
