Description
The George and Dragon Public House features a late 19th century facade that is part of an earlier building. The exterior is rendered white with an old tiled roof and has quoins at the outer ends. It stands three storeys high with three windows, all of which are sash windows, except for two later bays with cornices on the ground floor. The top centre storey has a half-hipped gable above an arched recess. This recess is adorned with a moulded architrave and a decorated plaster surround, housing a gilded and painted figure of St George and the Dragon in high relief, which serves as the inn sign. There is a supporting bracketed cornice and an additional bracketed cornice that holds a signboard. The doorway features a hood with moulding on the inside and fluted stops on the outside. Steps lead up to the entrance, flanked by rails and lamp standards. Its important focal position at the corner of the market place justifies its Grade II listing.
