Description
The Green Man and Black's Head Hotel is a mid-18th century building located on St John's Street. It is constructed of red brick with a tiled roof and stands three storeys high, featuring seven windows with plain lintels and sills, and sashes with glazing bars. There is a square-headed arch leading to a courtyard, which has some pictorial appeal, and a rear moulded wooden bay window that overlooks it. Notably, there is a painted, rare iron and wood "gallows" inn sign that bridges the road. The hotel is historically significant as Dr. Johnson stayed here on several occasions, as noted by Boswell. The building is part of a group that includes No 2 and Nos 6 to 44 (even).
