Description
The former Smedley's Hydropathic, now County Council Offices, was originally built in 1867. It is a stone building with four storeys and eleven windows that are fitted with modern sashes. The design features sill bands and castellated parapets. On the south side, there is a later single-storey addition that includes four circular windows. An additional four-storey wing on the east side, added around 1885 by George Statham of Nottingham, has a tower on the left-hand side with a square mansard roof topped by iron cresting and a corona. Much of the original interior has been preserved. This building is part of a large and complex structure with many later additions and alterations, prominently located high above the town.
