Description

The large centre block of Brimington County Junior Mixed School was built in 1878. The facade features a stone lettered band that reads "Brimington Tapton District Central Board Schools." The building is constructed of red brick with blue brick bands and stone dressings, topped with a brick eaves cornice and slate roof with cresting. Its irregular facade includes a gable with a Gothic arch that contains flat arched windows below, a short tower with a heavy corbelled cornice and blocking course, and two lancet windows. There is a hipped gable with a three-light stone bay window, followed by an advanced gable featuring two Gothic arched windows with plate tracery and dripstone moulds. The entrance is a single-storey Gothic arched design with a half hipped gabled dormer above and a small three-light window on each side. The end section has an advanced gable with a Gothic arch that contains flat arched later casements and doors. The school was enlarged in 1888.
