Description
Tapton House is a late 18th-century building, somewhat in the style of John Carr of York. It is constructed of red brick and features double stone bands above the ground floor. The house has three storeys with a window arrangement of four-ones-three sashes, and the central three-light sash is set in an advanced bay topped with a pediment. A stone modillion cornice adorns the roof, which is hipped and covered with slate. The first-floor central window includes a stone balustrade and wooden mullions supported by Corinthian pilasters.
The entrance features a three-part stone doorway with columns, sidelights, and a pediment. The side elevation has five windows, with a prominent three-bay stone window feature that includes pilasters and a cornice. The entrance is accessed by round steps, and the central windows have ornamental stone architraves. The rear of the house has eight windows and a notable open stone door with a pediment.
Inside, the decor is late 18th-century in style, with much of it remaining original, though there are later embellishments. The house is set in a landscape park on top of a hill, which is now public. Historically, Tapton House was the residence of George Stephenson, the railway pioneer.
