Description
The signal box, built in 1906 and re-erected around 1985, is located 30 metres northeast of Cumberland House at the Midland Railway Trust Station in Ripley. It is constructed of timber and features a Welsh slate roof. The building has a single bay, is two storeys high, and has a rectangular plan. The ground floor is weatherboarded, with a 4-pane window positioned below a flight of timber steps on the left side. The second stage jetties out and is adorned with three large 12-pane side-sliding sash windows that span the full width of the front. The hipped roof has overhanging eaves and ridge finials. On the left side, there is a half-glazed door flanked by two 4-pane windows on the right and one on the left. The interior retains all the original workings. This signal box was formerly located at Ais Gill, which is noted as the highest signal box in the country, and represents a classic example of a Midland Railway box.
