Description

The Church of St John the Evangelist is an Anglican church located in Hazelwood, built in 1840 by H I Stevens. It was restored after fire damage by Naylor and Sale. The church is constructed of coursed squared gritstone with ashlar dressings, rising from a shallow plinth, and features coped gables with wheel cross finials, topped by a graded Westmorland slate roof.

The building includes a nave with a gabled bellcote and a south porch, as well as a chancel and vestry. The gabled bellcote is situated at the southwest end and has angle buttresses, a trefoil-headed doorway with a deeply moulded surround, a pointed arched head, and a hoodmould. The tall gabled porch features a curved triangular recess that incorporates a clock face, along with angle buttresses at the corners. The pointed arched doorway here has moulded shafts and a deeply undercut surround beneath a hoodmould, and it is fitted with a planked and studded door that has ornamental hinges.

On the sides, there are 2-light pointed arched windows with hoodmoulds and block stops. Shallow buttresses delineate the bays of the nave, with the cills of three single light pointed lancets linked by a moulded stringcourse. The chancel consists of three bays, featuring pointed sidewall lancets with hoodmoulds and a decorative corbel table that supports a moulded eaves cornice, with cills linked by a continuous stringcourse. Clasping buttresses are present at the gable end, with a linking stringcourse stepping up beneath a tripartite pointed arched east window that has moulded mullions and surround. The gabled vestry on the north wall of the chancel includes coupled lancets beneath a hoodmould with block stops. The interior furnishings are contemporary.
