Description
The George & Dragon is a former coaching inn located on Bridge Street, with its earliest part dating from the late 17th century to early 18th century. The building features a facade constructed from coursed stone rubble and has a modern pantiled roof, with quoins at the corners. The southern facade rises three storeys and has three windows with stone mullions, although the ground floor windows have been altered.
The northern section of the building appears to have been added in the 18th century, with the west windows of the earlier southern part also remodeled during this time. The eastern facade, facing the street, is three storeys high and includes four sash windows on the top floor and two on the first floor, all with stone surrounds. The ground floor has two windows and a former 19th-century shop window. A Doric columned porch enhances the entrance, featuring a frieze carved with masks, a cornice, and a blocking course. The building also has a coved eaves cornice and displays a painted swinging sign on a wrought iron bracket.
