Description

A range of cottages located on The Street, South Luffenham, dating to the late 17th and 18th centuries, with restoration work carried out in 1901. The cottages are constructed of coursed rubble stone with ashlar quoins and stone dressings, topped with Collyweston slate roofs, incorporating stone and brick ridge, end, and rear stacks. Some gables have stone copings. The arrangement follows a curving Z-shaped plan.

The cottages present a gabled frontage to the street, with the main elevation on the right-hand side. The windows are predominantly 2-light casements and 3-light centre-opening casements, with some dormers above. Plank doors are present at several locations, accompanied by windows above. A stone tablet is set into the gable end facing the street, inscribed with "Sapcote's Charity: bequeathed 1857, restored 1901." The right-hand section of the last cottage (No. 19), now a shop, is not considered to be of particular architectural interest. Windows on the rear and side elevations are similar in style. Some re-roofing work was undertaken in the 20th century. The cottages hold important group value in relation to the adjacent Church.
