Description

The Presbytery to the Cathedral Church of St Barnabas, built between 1841 and 1844 by Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin, is a notable example of Tudor Revival architecture. The building is constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings and features slate roofs with coped gables. It has a square plan with a central light well and stands two storeys high, plus attics, with a configuration of three windows across the front.

The entrance, located on the west side, showcases a pointed arched doorway with a hood mould. To the left of the entrance is a three-light cross casement window, followed by two additional cross casements. To the right, there is a cross casement stair window and an external stack. Above the entrance, three mullioned windows can be seen, with the rightmost being smaller, and above that, a gabled dormer.

On the south front, there is a shouldered external stack that contains two segmental pointed recesses with cross casements, topped with a crest. To the right, a cross casement window is situated, with two mullioned windows above it. To the left, a gabled wing features a canted bay window with five lights and a hipped lead roof, along with a small mullioned window above.

At the north-east corner, there is a lean-to porch that includes a pointed arched door and a two-light pointed arched window, which connects directly to a corridor leading to the Cathedral on Derby Road. The building has undergone some 20th-century alterations.
